Title: Lady Midnight (Dark Artifices #1)
Author: Cassandra Clare
Release date: 08.03.2016
Synopsis
It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.
Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…
Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?
Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.
Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare – Book Review
I JUST FINISHED LADY MIDNIGHT AND I’M FREAKING OUT. THAT WAS…. CRAZY.
I was excited but skeptical when I first heard that there would be a spin off to the TMI. Even though I LOVE the shadowhunter world, I was wondering how much more can she write about the Shadowhunters. BUUUTTTT I WAS WRONG and thank God I was wrong because this book is AMAZING.
The story takes place five years after City of Heavenly Fire and this time we are following Emma Carstairs and the Blackthorn family. They live in in Los Angeles institute. These characters were children during the Dark War and we got to see how much they’ve grown up since then. Julian Blackthorn had to take care of the family since he’s the oldest brother, well at least the one who still lives in the institute. His older brother was taken and his older sister was exiled. Thankfully he has Emma Carstairs, his best friend and parabatai.
Emma’s parents died in the Dark War and since then she lived with the Blackthorns. From the beginning of the book we got to see how tough and determined Emma was. She wanted to find out the truth about her parents’ death because she was sure that Sebastian Morgenstern didn’t kill them.
Other than dealing with their responsibilities, the two also have to deal with their feelings for each other. Since it’s forbidden for parabatai to fall in love, they have to hide their feelings and I HATE THAT LAW SO MUCH. I would personally go to the Clave and change the law if I could.
Other than the two, we get to see Julian’s siblings, Mark, Ty, Livvy, Dru, and Tavvy. We got to see them dealing with the aftermath of the Dark War. So many nightmares in that house. All I want to do is to hug and cuddle each of them.
Emma’s best friend, Cristina from the Mexican institute is quickly becoming one of my favourite. I think they all should be thankful for Cristina’s existence because without her, their life would be a little messier, literally. She has her own story and I was so curious. Thankfully it’s revealed in this book. Not sure if I can handle another secret and have to wait for the next book.
Finally, if I have to describe this book in one word, it would be intense. There is so much plot twist in the book. I’m not sure what but there is something in the way the book written that just sucked you right in to the shadowhunter world. Cassandra Clare definitely did it again with this book.
I gave this book 5/5 because it’s just perfect. It keeps you on your toes. It reveals secrets about the Shadowhunter world. IT IS JUST THAT GOOD. Also, we got to meet the characters from TMI and TID (MAGNUS! JEM! TESSA! JACE! CLARY!)
I should probably end my review here because if not, I’m going to spoil all of you. But seriously if you read The Mortal Instruments and/or The Infernal Devices, please read this book!
