A follow-up to The Deal, The Mistake is a delightful blend of romance, humour, and heartfelt emotion. We are still at Briar and this time we’re meeting Garrett’s best friend John Logan and his new girl, Grace Ivers.
The book starts with Logan struggling with his unrequited feelings for Hannah. To distract himself, he indulges in casual flings until he meets Grace, a freshman with refreshing honesty and a quirky personality. While Logan has always been a confident and self-assured person, Grace was a shy, self-conscious freshman. She couldn’t believe when she had the John Logan hanging out with her. However, a misunderstanding leads Logan to mess up their budding relationship and he spends the rest of the novel trying to win her back.
I’m re-reading the entire series and I forgot how fun The Mistake is. It was fun seeing Grace’s transformation from a shy freshman to a confident sophomore – I feel like a proud older sister. No other FMC has made their man grovel more than Grace Ivers. All the tasks she laid out for Logan to do before agreeing to a date? Hysterical.
Like the other Elle Kennedy books, it’s not always fun and games for these characters. We get to know Logan and his struggles with family obligations and his future a bit more. I just found myself rooting for Logan to reach his dream of wearing the Bruins jersey with Garrett. I’m treating these characters like my best friends, I know. I think The Mistake is another example where Elle Kennedy manages to balance light-hearted moments with more serious themes. The book is also written in dual POV, which you all know I love because I got to know what goes on in both characters’ heads.
Overall, The Mistake is a charming and heartfelt romance that continues to build on the strengths of the Off-Campus series. Elle Kennedy masterfully combines humour, emotion, and romance to create a story that is both entertaining and meaningful. Logan and Grace’s journey is one of growth, forgiveness, and finding love in unexpected places. The second chance trope is often a hit-or-miss for me, but The Mistake is an example of a second chance trope done right.

He wants her back? He’ll have to work for it. This time around, she’ll be the one in the driver’s seat…and she plans on driving him wild.
