One thing about me as a reader is that I will read any books about books and the publishing world. A fictional glimpse into the world of books will always hook me in. As a romance reader, the premise of Meet Me in the Margins caught my attention right away. A romance in a publishing house between an editor and an author involving anonymous cute notes? What better meet-cute!
Savannah is an editor in a publishing house. A people pleaser and loyal, Savannah’s instinct in life is to keep everyone around her happy. Including her younger sister who’s engaged to her ex-boyfriend (I would never!). Savannah’s secret? She’s writing a romance book, a genre that is not allowed by her boss.
She worked on her manuscript in a secret room in the office and one day found notes in the margins. Initially outraged, she then started to realise that the notes are actually useful and she could use the help. She and her anonymous editor started sharing notes through the margins of her manuscript, thus began the clandestine interaction.
Outside of the secret room, Savannah and everyone else in the publishing house are shaken by the arrival of her boss’ son, William. While Savannah was able to get on his good side, she also has to deal with her growing feelings for him – and her secret editor which complicate things for herself.
At home, Savannah has to deal with pressure from her family who put loyalty to family against everything else. With her seemingly perfect younger sister and her ex-boyfriend getting married, Savannah had to put aside her own feelings and show her support for them.
Meet Me in the Margins is a sweet and light romance story. I adored the premise and I liked the developing romance and all the complications that come with it. I’m sure we all know who the secret editor is, but I enjoyed how Savannah was thrown off the course. One note though: if you like spice in your romance, this one might be a skip. With just one kiss in the book, it’s a very PG romance. It also doesn’t delve deep into some of the issues and things are discussed at a more surface level. Overall, it’s a really enjoyable read (well, listen) and it does its job as a fun easy read.

Savannah Cade’s dreams are coming true. The Claire Donovan, editor-in-chief of the most successful romance imprint in the country, has requested to see the manuscript Savannah’s been secretly writing while working as an editor herself—except at her publishing house, the philosophy is only highbrow works are worth printing and commercial fiction, particularly romance, should be reserved for the lowest level of Dante’s inferno. But when Savannah drops her manuscript during a staff meeting and nearly exposes herself to the whole company—including William Pennington, new publisher and son of the romance-despising CEO herself—she races to hide her manuscript in the secret turret room of the old Victorian office.
When she returns, she’s dismayed to discover that someone has not only been in her hidden nook but has written notes in the margins—quite critical ones. But when Claire’s own reaction turns out to be nearly identical to the scribbled remarks, and worse, Claire announces that Savannah has six weeks to resubmit before she retires, Savannah finds herself forced to seek the help of the shadowy editor after all.
As their notes back and forth start to fill up the pages, however, Savannah finds him not just becoming pivotal to her work but her life. There’s no doubt about it. She’s falling for her mystery editor. If she only knew who he was.
