I started the first day of 2019 with Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I’ve read a few reviews last year but decided to pick this up after one of my favourite bookish podcasts, Bad On Paper, picked this book for their podcast book club. It didn’t disappoint!
If you are into Pretty Little Liars, I think you’d enjoy Little White Lies a lot. The story itself follows the story of a girl named Sawyer Taft who received a visit from her grandmother and offered to join the world of high society that her mother left behind. Driven by her curiousity to find her father, she left behind her mother and her job as a mechanic to be part of the debutante season. What comes next is Sawyer navigating this new world and all its secrets.
The moment I met Sawyer, I knew I wouldn’t put this book down. She’s witty and sarcastic, two of my favourite qualities in human beings. But beyond Sawyer, I found myself becoming more and more transfixed by the secrets in this high society. You got to meet the rest of Sawyer’s family; her grandmother, her aunt and uncle, and her cousins, Lily. Despite the perfect image, her family is not perfect and I’m glad we got to see all the flaws and mistakes the family did.
Not only the Taft family, we also got to meet the other high society families and of course, they all have their own secret. In unveiling her own secret, Sawyer also managed to unveil the other family’s secret along the way. Bottom line, there are many secrets waiting to be unveiled in this book that you won’t stop reading. The secrets themselves are very intriguing and so intertwined with each other. Barnes didn’t give many things away so you may not be able to guess the secrets until the end of the book. So many twists and turns in this one.
The ending was totally jaw-dropping for me and I couldn’t wait for the next book. Little White Lies will completely captivate you as you watch the secrets unfold and the truths came to surface. If you love a good young adult mystery book, give Little White Lies a try!
Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

“I’m not saying this is Sawyer’s fault,” the prim and proper one said delicately. “But.”
Eighteen-year-old auto mechanic Sawyer Taft did not expect her estranged grandmother to show up at her apartment door and offer her a six-figure contract to participate in debutante season. And she definitely never imagined she would accept. But when she realizes that immersing herself in her grandmother’s “society” might mean discovering the answer to the biggest mystery of her life-her father’s identity-she signs on the dotted line and braces herself for a year of makeovers, big dresses, bigger egos, and a whole lot of bless your heart. The one thing she doesn’t expect to find is friendship, but as she’s drawn into a group of debutantes with scandalous, dangerous secrets of their own, Sawyer quickly discovers that her family isn’t the only mainstay of high society with skeletons in their closet. There are people in her grandmother’s glittering world who are not what they appear, and no one wants Sawyer poking her nose into the past. As she navigates the twisted relationships between her new friends and their powerful parents, Sawyer’s search for the truth about her own origins is just the beginning.
Set in the world of debutante balls, grand estates and rolling green hills, Little White Lies combines a charming setting, a classic fish-out-of-water story, and the sort of layered mystery only author Jennifer Lynn Barnes can pull off.
