Let me start this post by acknowledging that I’ve been waiting for Chain of Gold since it was first announced in 2014. As much as I loved The Mortal Instruments, I was more in love with Infernal Devices. When Cassandra Clare she was going to write more about the Shadowhunters during that era, I knew I was going to read it. Here we are six years later and I finally got to meet the teenage Herondales, Carstairs, Lightwoods, Fairchilds, and Blackthorns.
A Calmer Beginning for the Shadowhunters
Having been reading Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters world, I am used to a more chaotic beginning to a series. However, Chain of Gold begins with a calmer settings. There hasn’t been any major problem for the Shadowhunters and it made them sort of complacent. It almost felt eerie; like I was just waiting for the shoe to drop. Rest assured, when the shoe drops, you won’t be able to stop reading!
Given the calmer beginning, it was already a huge difference compared to the usually fast-paced world. Even until the end of the book, you know that the worst is yet to come. Everything moves in a slower pace but somehow I know that this helps set the story for this series. For me, the pace gives me a clearer details to things that we might miss has the book moved faster.
One of my favourite things about her novels were how memorable and distinguished her characters are. Whether you love or hate them, there is always that one trait in each character that you remember and she did just that in this one.
COG probably has the largest number of characters compared to her previous books. Nonetheless this doesn’t hold Cassandra Clare back from writing amazing characters. It might be too early to choose my favourite characters, however I have to say that Cordelia is currently my favourite. Matthew Fairchild is a close second.
Chain of Gold Could Be The Perfect Intro to the Shadowhunters World
For those who are curious about the Shadowhunters, Chain of Gold could be a great entry point. As previously mentioned, the other series started with a much chaotic beginning. The calmer beginning provides the perfect settings to let those who never read the series before to understand why we love the Shadowhunters world so much.
I truly can’t wait for the second book in this series! Based on my impression reading Chain of Gold, I can tell that The Last Hour might be my second favourite series in this whole saga.
