Synopsis
For some people, silence is a weapon. For Mallory “Mouse” Dodge, it’s a shield. Growing up, she learned that the best way to survive was to say nothing. And even though it’s been four years since her nightmare ended, she’s beginning to worry that the fear that holds her back will last a lifetime.
Now, after years of homeschooling with loving adoptive parents, Mallory must face a new milestone—spending her senior year at public high school. But of all the terrifying and exhilarating scenarios she’s imagined, there’s one she never dreamed of—that she’d run into Rider Stark, the friend and protector she hasn’t seen since childhood, on her very first day.
It doesn’t take long for Mallory to realize that the connection she shared with Rider never really faded. Yet the deeper their bond grows, the more it becomes apparent that she’s not the only one grappling with the lingering scars from the past. And as she watches Rider’s life spiral out of control, Mallory faces a choice between staying silent and speaking out—for the people she loves, the life she wants, and the truths that need to be heard.
Review
I’m not sure how to begin because my heart *sobs*
This book tells a gorgeous high school romance. Mallory and Rider grew up in an abusive foster home and they live constantly in fear. Rider, though only a few months older than Mallory, always took care and protected Mallory. One day, after an incident, they were separated. Four years later, they were reunited. During those four years, Mallory’s life has improved. She was at a better place after all the support and her own effort to change her life.
The moment the two met, you would know that the two would not be separated again. It was really nice to see the two re-connect and catch up. Yes, at the beginning, he had a girlfriend. Though there was no crazy love triangle here since Rider is very upfront about how much Mallory meant to him with his girlfriend. It did take a while for the dynamic of their relationship to work out, but you know they were meant to be.
The romance though is only a small part of the book. As someone who’s not comfortable putting myself out there, I can relate so much to her. The way Jennifer wrote Mallory’s story feels so real. I could feel her nervousness all the way from here and I’m glad when she managed to break out of her shell. That to me is the most important part of the story for me is Mallory’s growth throughout the book. We had the pleasure of seeing her came out of her shell and gained courage to be the person she wanted to be. The book sends a strong message of being real, being true to yourself, and choosing what you make you happy rather than what pleases other people. It also sends another message of how life is defined by who you are and who you want to be.
The last few chapters will send your heart racing and full of anticipation. The book is such a page-turner and the ending was beautiful *sobs heavily*
As a fan of Jennifer L. Armentrout, I knew that the book would not disappoint. But this book is beyond my imagination. It’s raw and vulnerable. It affects me in so many ways. So glad I read the book. I loved the writing and I was so attached to the characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for the next YA romance to read!
