One of Us is Lying Karen McManus Review

SYNOPSIS

One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Pay close attention and you might solve this.

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.

Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.

Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.

Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.

Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.

And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?

Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.

ONE OF US IS LYING BY KAREN MCMANUS – BOOK REVIEW

If One of Us Is Lying was a TV show, I would watch it religiously. This book is a freaking page turner!

The story is sooooo bloody good! It keeps me wondering and I couldn’t help but trying to solve the mystery myself and I loved that! One thing I love about mystery book is the feeling of being involved. Also, the book is unpredictable so it really did a great job of making you want to find out how it ends. The whole plot is very well-planned. There are so many possibilities that could happen but this book is on another level. The ending was really unexpected and that shocked me.

One thing that struck me the most about this book is how scary high school kids are. They can be mean and really don’t care about others as long as they are doing fine and if they are more ambitious, popular. I don’t know if this actually happens in real life, but it was definitely highlighted in this books.

The characters in the book is a very interesting mix; a jock, a popular girl, a goody-two-shoes, and a bad boy. I realised that they are a big reason why I couldn’t stop reading the book – not even for food. Each dirty secrets uncovered in the story really gives you an insight of who they really are. It makes them less of walking stereotypes and far more interesting since there’s depth to these characters. They are all so well thought out and well-developed.

Overall, it’s a very enjoyable read. The book is one of the most hyped up books in the bookish community and it doesn’t disappoint. I always have my hesitation with hyped up YA mystery books because I haven’t found many books that really stand out for me in that genre but this one delivers. I’d recommend this one to be added to your summer tbr list. Also, I would love to see this on-screen and like I mentioned earlier, if it is on screen, I would binge-watch this for sure!

Have you read this book? What did you think of it?

xo,

Naths
