Synopsis

One life-changing summer.
One boy.
The boy.
The boy who offered me safe touches and heart-stopping smiles – smiles he shared with his son.
We filled our days with porch-step kisses,
filled our ears with laughter,
filled our hearts with love.
Deep, soul-aching, desperate love.
But love is misleading.
It’s an invisible, fleeting moment.
Somewhere between false adoration and pure hatred comes an emotion, a vulnerable need, a single desire.
It lives within the ones who miss it, who crave it,
who know better than to expect it.
Love is relentless.
Even when that love turns to hate, turns to loathing,
turns to pain.
Love should heal you.
But it can also break you.
Believe me, I know…
Because I’m Becca Owens – a broken girl…
…And he’s Josh Warden – the boy who broke me.

Coast (Kick, Push #2) by Jay McLean – Book Review

The first book in this series, Kick, Push, was one of the book I really liked in 2015. However, picking up the continuation was nerve-wrecking and exciting at the same time. The first book didn’t end in a happy note so I was really curious how the story continues, but I was also nervous because who knows what drama is going to be in this book.

To me, this book is more of a Becca story than Josh’s. Becca in this book is definitely living her life. She was really becoming herself and I couldn’t be more excited for her. After overcoming the abuse she experienced in her childhood and all the drama she faced in Kick, Push, she is now working on becoming herself. Though at the beginning, she was missing her Josh and her best buddy Tommy, she was also making friends, living with her dad, studying, writing, and going to therapies at the same time. She was making a life for herself. Josh, is still the same Josh as he was in the first book. A dad who takes care of his son, Tommy while traveling around the world, skateboarding.

The story in this one is a slow built. Becca and Josh are reunited and trying to navigate their relationship among the changes that happened in their life. The part that always makes me smile is whenever Tommy is with Becca. His joy and happiness in seeing his best friend was truly adorable and touching.

Another important character that plays a significant part in this book is Grams. She was Becca’s grandmother who also helped Josh when he was first become a single father. Though she had dementia, her personality still shines throughout and she definitely adds more to the story.

Jay McLean is one of my favorite authors and I always ended up in tears and a smile on my face every time I finished her book. This book was a well crafted story with so much emotions. The ending was perfect and beautiful.

The first one was a little bit too slow for me but this one is just the perfect pace! x
